Tasting notes
Composed of 54% Cabernet Franc, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, 5% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2018 De Compostella has an expressive nose led by notions of roasted red bell pepper, red cherry skin, turned earth, sage and sweet oak spices. Medium to full-bodied, flavors of pepper skin and graphite sway with Christmas spice and red plum followed by a tight mineral tension and firm gripping tannins across the mid-palate. I can sense the energy of the wine increasing in amplitude as it sits in the mouth, and I find it acting similar to quality Bordeaux wines. The red blend continues to reveal its complexities and layers over the long, lingering and evolving finish. It’s a gorgeous wine that needs time and/or food. Be patient.

The 2018 MR de Compostella is a blend of 54% Cabernet Franc, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, 5% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. It presents a compelling bouquet of blackberry, charcoal, cedar and tobacco, all showing wonderful delineation and focus. But it is not the most flamboyant on the nose compared to other vintages; this takes its time to open at a stately pace. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, perfectly judged acidity, a silky-smooth texture and an utterly harmonious, complex finish. Residues of allspice and clove linger on the long aftertaste. Brilliant.
