Tasting notes
The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva is a potent, burly wine that is going to need a few years to shed some of its formidable tannin. Black cherry, herbs, leather, licorice, game and gravel add to an impression of darkness. This muscular, burly Riserva demands patience. So, what else is new here?

Castelnuovo Berardenga. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Firm cherry nose with hints of raw meat and wet stones. Lots of juicy supple cherry fruit and firm but fine tannins. Very voluminous yet not heavy. Long and finely balanced. Generous yet elegant. (WS)
The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva is a big, potent wine that is going to need a number of years to be at its most expressive. Today, I am quite taken by the wine’s sheer heft, which is unusual for an estate where the wines tend to be a bit more restrained than this. Then again, we are in Castelnuovo Berardenga, where the wines can carry quite a bit of volume. Black cherry, game, licorice, menthol, sage and lavender open with a bit of coaxing. This is a super-classic Riserva from one of the most old-school producers in Chianti Classico.
