Tasting notes
From 49-year-old vines on the calcareous Muschelkalk terroir far above the village of Hunawihr, the 2019 Clos Windsbuhl Hunawihr Gewurztraminer is deep, intense and aromatic on the initially moderately fruity and rather spicy nose that becomes super aromatic and fruit-intense after aeration and intermingles chalky terroir aromas with tropical fruit aromas reminiscent of pineapples, mangoes and lush melons. Rich but elegant and refined on the palate and provided with a certain freshness that also becomes more obvious with aeration, this is a pretty sweet yet tight and finely tannic, not really dry but tending toward dry-finishing Gewürztraminer "moelleux" that is reserved, even snappy, if poured straight from the bottle, yet it's just far too young, though it has promising talents if aerated for a day or two. 13.1% alcohol including 35.6 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted in November 2024.

Gewurz can be an impressive but tiring wine. With its floral delicacy and lively, graceful personality, this is the opposite of the bombastic norm. The touch of sweetness stays in the background and the floral freshness wins out at the long, precise finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
