Siepi enters a new chapter with this vintage, a beautiful achievement by the Mazzei family and their talented consulting enologist Carlo Ferrini. The Mazzei 2006 Siepi is in cruise control at the height of its drinking potential right now. This blend of Merlot and Sangiovese (aged in French oak for 18 months) is exuberant and lively with hints of blackberry, wild plum and dried currant. The vintage offers good freshness to keep it lively, and there are pretty renderings of spice and smoke that soften up the finish. This wine has found its balance today, some 16 years after the grapes came off the vines.

Full bottle all of 1,513 g. Alcohol: 13.8%. Total acidity: 6 g/l. Harvest after a particularly successful, regular growing season: hand-picked starting from 6 September (Merlot), 22 September (Sangiovese). Fermentation temperature: 28–30 °C. Period of maceration: 14 days (Merlot), 16 days (Sangiovese). Ageing: 16–18 months in small French oak barrels (225 litre, 70% new.) Bottling: July 2008. Production: 30,000 bottles. Dark crimson with a pale rim. Rich, aromatic nose and very savoury. Still with some tannins in evidence. Ambitious wine that has so much dug in there that it's still pretty embryonic. Remarkably concentrated. Ideally aerate this if you plan to serve it before 2025. (JR)

The 2006 Siepi is particularly beautiful in this vintage. The wine reveals tons of clarity, depth and precision in its violets, blackberries, minerals and French oak, with remarkable balance in between the fruit, acid and tannins. This full-bodied, vibrant Siepi could use a few years in bottle, but the wine's impeccable balance means it can be enjoyed sooner than that, especially if the bottle is opened well in advance. This is a terrific effort from proprietor Filippo Mazzei, consulting oenologist Carlo Ferrini and their team. Siepi is Sangiovese and Merlot that spent 18 months in French oak.
