Tasting notes
The 2018 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has a dense and backward bouquet that I suspect has closed down a little since bottling. Dark berry fruit, touches of baking powder and blood orange surface with time. The palate is medium-bodied but tight at the moment with grippy tannins, very pure, quite masculine and almost Pommard-like for a Volnay with a citrus-driven finish. Impressive, but it needs time.

The 2018 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru comes from a small parcel of 0.16 hectares that produced two barrels this year. It includes 50% whole-bunch fruit and is matured in 50% new oak. There is a lot of panache on the harmonious bouquet of perfumed, pure wild strawberry and cranberry fruit mixed with subtle undergrowth tones. The fleshy palate is medium-bodied with ripe, succulent tannins and a fine bead of acidity. The whole bunch contributes a pepperiness toward the finish. Maybe another vintage would have imparted a little more finesse, though this still constitutes a fine Les Mitans.
