Pale yellow-gold. Vibrant, mineral-driven citrus and pit fruit aromas are complemented by hints of saffron and pungent flowers. Intense, palate-staining orange, Anjou pear and white peach flavors show excellent concentration and sharp focus. A candied ginger nuance adds spicy cut. Spreads out steadily on an impressively long, floral-accented finish that emphatically repeats the citrus and mineral notes.

Based on 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, the 2018 Saint-Péray Cuvée Prestige is brilliant stuff and would stand undetected in a lineup of top Hermitage Blancs. A Meursault-like bouquet of white currants, toasted bread, scorched earth, and hints of flowers gives way to a rich, powerful yet flawlessly balanced white that has tons of richness yet no sensation of weight or heaviness. It shows loads of minerality and focus on the finish, and while I’d drink bottles over the coming decade, it will keep longer. Enough can’t be said about the quality now coming from the domaine of Stéphane Robert. Both his reds and whites are world-class in every sense.

As usual, Robert's 2018 Saint Peray Cuvee Prestige blends 80% Marsanne (from vines more than 100 years old) with 20% Roussanne. The flavors blend pear and melon, adding a touch of peppery spice and nettle-like notes. It's full-bodied, with a rich, velvety feel and hints of honeyed richness on the lengthy finish.

80% Marsanne, 20% Roussanne. Aged for 10 months in oak. Tasted blind. Neutral fruit on the nose although the palate has marginally better definition. Thick and glutinous on the palate. Feels like it might set if you left it long enough. (RH)
