Billaud's 2019 Petit Chablis mingles notions of lemon oil and beeswax with hints of white flowers and iodine. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and precise, with tangy acids and chalky grip, it's once again an outperforming cuvée.

Cask sample. More intense on the nose compared with the Bourgogne d'Or, likewise on the palate. Tight and chalky but pure Chablis character in its stony citrus. Decent length too. More expensive than the Bourgogne d'Or but better value. Surprisingly persistent and the depth of fruit on the mid palate is impressive – will appeal both to lovers of classic Chablis and to those who like a bit more fruit. (JH)

Samuel Billaud started making wine under his own name in 2009, but he is one of the most experienced producers in Chablis, having made wine in the region since 1985.
