Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly has an attractive bouquet with hints of nougat and almond complementing the citrus fruit, perhaps with some new oak still to be absorbed. The palate is well balanced with orange zest and grapefruit on the entry. There is a keen line of acidity here that complements the concentration towards the finish. There is good volume to this Saint-Aubin and impressive persistence in the mouth, crowning what is a well-crafted, generous Saint-Aubin. Tasted May 2016.

Foulage. Now they slightly crush grapes before press to give a bit more tension in the wine. Sélection massale vines. Broad and friendly. With good density of fruit. Lots of layers and very clean on the finish. Racy. (JR)
(aging in one- and two-year-old 600-liter barrels): Good full yellow. White peach, acacia flower and nutty oak on the nose and palate. Boasts good chewy density and intensity of flavor, with salty traces accentuating the impression of dusty extract. Strong material here, even if this wine is a bit hardened by the recent sulfur addition. This may well be the best value in the cellar.

Volnay’s Domaine de Montille is one of the most historic in the Côte d’Or. Founded in 1730, the property remains family-owned and run, with Etienne de Montille – the ninth generation – at the helm today.
