The 2016 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne wasn't touched by frost and thus remains quite classic in profile, offering up notes of pear, musky peach, hazelnut cream and spring flowers. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, ample and glossy, with bright acids, lovely purity and a finely chalky finish.

First vintage 2013. 70-year-old vines. Given by an aunt. Barrel sample. Very rich nose though extremely tight on the palate. Real undertow and power. Long and throbbing. Almost painfully etched on the palate – like a knife! (JR)
(no frost here; from 85-year-old vines that produce very small berries): Pale yellow. Slightly reduced aromas of pear drop and hazelnut. Plush and fine-grained, conveying terrific intensity and stony minerality to its ripe peach and nectarine flavors. Finishes very dry, classic and palate-staining, with a touch of menthol austerity. Terrific potential here.
