(the Bouleys own the closest parcel to the village, situated just below the Rugiens-Bas; just nine hectoliters per hectare produced in 2016): Moderately saturated medium red. Less fruity on the nose than the Clos des Chènes, offering scents of redcurrant, musky mocha and tobacco. Less dense and fleshy than the Clos des Chènes but showing good lift to its cherry and spice flavors. Comes across as a bit tight on the finish, with the tannins showing a dusty texture. These 43-year-old vines are planted on SO4 rootstock but have lost some of their vigor in recent years and produce a significant percentage of millerandé grapes.

The 2016 Pommard 1er Cru Les Fremiers was cropped at just 9 hectoliters per hectare, or two barrels, this vintage. It has a gentle bouquet that works up through the gears with aeration, developing lovely mineral-rich red cherry and strawberry fruit with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite poised and focused, not a powerful or fruit-driven Pommard but brimming over with tension and poise. Excellent.
