Tasting notes
The 2018 Mabalel Pinot Noir comes from the Overberg region and is fermented with native yeasts and 10% whole clusters and matured for 11 months with 20% new oak. It has a pure, seductive bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry fruit; incense and lavender aromas emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, velvety smoothness and just the right amount of acidity. There is a sense of plushness toward the finish, where a noticeable residual pepperiness tingles 30 seconds after the wine has departed. This is very classy.

Single vineyard, 10% whole bunch. Lightish cherry red. Less pretty and more savoury and spiced than the Peter Max. Subtle but deep in red fruit. As it opens, that floral scent starts to emerge. More serious than the Peter Max but not because of the winemaking, just because of the fruit. A light dust of spice. Very good. Long too. (JH)
