Score 99/100 · Drink 2025-2053, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Dec 2025

The 2013 Barolo Riserva Monfortino picks up where the 1999 and 1996 leave off. Tannic and imposing, the 2013 is an austere young Monfortino for the cellar. Soaring aromatics and vibrant, palate-staining fruit are some of the signatures. Readers should expect a bold, large-framed Monfortino.

Serralunga d’Alba. Translucent ruby. Deep, savoury and complex raspberry nose of incredible intensity and with a depth that grows by the minute. Spectacularly balanced and refined and with lasting, tactile tannins adding energy. A stunningly complex wine that is cerebral as well as hedonistic. (WS)

The 2013 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is another huge, tannic wine. Crystalline and so precise, the 2013 is deceptive, as the aromatics are quite inviting, until masses of tannin hit the palate. Tar, rose petal, spice and cedar open with a bit of time in the glass, showing just enough to make the wine pleasurable today. Even so, the best is clearly yet to come. Patience will be rewarded.

Serralunga d’Alba.  Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Pure, minerally nose with enormous focus and depth. Pure and transparent on the palate with linear, red fruit and super-fine tannins. Refined and vibrant, with gorgeous, long-lasting, tannic grip. (WS)
