Tasting notes
Outpost's 2011 Petite Sirah The Other is fabulous. Rich, powerful and explosive, the 2011 is a real stunner. White pepper, blood orange, black fruit and savory herbs all flesh out in the glass and never let up. A structured, dense wine with plenty of tannin, the 2011 dazzles for its purity and personality. Another year or two in bottle should help the tannins soften a touch.

The limited production (175 cases) 2011 Petite Sirah The Other is made from 100% Petite Sirah, the most underrated, ageworthy varietal in California. Displaying a color that looks like pen ink, it is a meaty, northern Rhone-like effort revealing aromas of pepper and aged beef intermixed with a hint of smoky barbecue in the background. Deep and full-bodied with blue and black fruits dominating, this monster 2011 needs 5-8 years to develop more nuances. It should last for a minimum of two decades. This property high on Howell Mountain at an amazing elevation of 1,800 feet is owned by Kathy and Frank Dotzler. The debut vintage was 1998. They had the good sense to bring in Thomas Brown as their winemaker, and the results have included some terrific wines. This current group proves several points: 1.-2011 was a remarkably fine vintage on Howell Mountain; 2.- Outpost is intent on producing some of the world’s finest wines; 3.- this may be the finest Grenache made in northern California; and 4.- if you are a lover of complex, delicious wines, you should check out these Outpost offerings ASAP. Outpost has 19 acres under vine, 9 of which comprise their flagship True Vineyard. Five cuvees are currently being produced. Tel. (707) 965-1718
