As readers may know, Pataille's 2017 Bourgogne Le Chapitre derives from a historic vineyard that was excluded from the appellation of Marsannay because it's to the north of the village of Chenôve, even though it's clearly a high-quality site. Exhibiting aromas of orange rind, sweet soil tones, wild berries, plums and dark chocolate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a muscular chassis of powdery tannin and fine concentration. More structured than any of the domaine's Marsannay cuvées—excepting the Ancestrale—this will really blossom with four or five years in the cellar.

The 2017 Bourgogne le Chapitre Rouge was reductive during élevage , according to Pataille, and had consequently been racked in July. It has a very mineral-driven bouquet, more black fruit than red; subtle flinty/graphite scents emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin and a grippy, limestone-tinged finish. One of the most saline and masculine of Pataille’s 2017, but there is a symmetry about it that augurs well for the future.

Hard limestone. Best terroir of the village of Marsannay but INAO missed it when they established the AOC. Mid cherry red. More obviously stemmy on the nose than some in this line-up but with such fine red fruit and lightly floral fragrance. Racked a week ago. Seems a little more oaky but it is ‘recovering’ from the racking, says Laurent Pataille. The fruit is a bit beaten into submission at the moment. Very dry and quite chewy. Hard to judge at the moment, well structured, needs time to recover from the racking. (JH)
