The 2018 Haut-Batailley has a delightful bouquet with blackberry, wild strawberry, cedar and light tobacco scents, easily handling the precocity of the growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a little savory in style and quite focused toward the finish. This is very fine, although I actually err toward the previous vintage.

A bigger vintage than 2017, which translates into a more powerful and structured wine - helped also no doubt by the influence of the new team. For drinking now, I would suggest the 2017 vintage, but this is great quality, has plenty of ageing potential, with layers of cocoa bean, dense cassis and bilberry fruits, and enjoyably supple tannins. 38hl/h yield, 60% new oak for ageing, with the time in oak brought down to 14 months. Harvest September 21 to October 8.
Tasted blind. Some rather exotic spice on the nose. Rich start melds into massive tannic structure. Bodes well for the future though there is no shortage of alcohol on this wine! (JR)
About the producer
The Cazes family – owners of Lynch-Bages and Ormes de Pez – purchased Haut-Batailley in 2017. They’ve embarked on a significant replanting programme, and exciting things are likely to come from this address with its new backing.
