Bright purple. Smoke-accented aromas of blueberry, cherry, licorice and olive paste are sharpened by a subtle mineral quality. Smooth and warm on the palate, offering ripe dark berry, salty olive and violet pastille flavors that show good concentration and spicy lift. Dusty, slow-building tannins add grip to the smoky finish, which echoes the cherry and licorice notes.

Moving to the reds, Gaillards's 2016 Cornas has outstanding potential and offers lots of spice, cured meats and leather as well as impressive red and black fruits in its medium to full-bodied, balanced profile. It's a classic Cornas from this estate that's going to drink nicely for 10-12 years. Located in the northern part of Saint Joseph, this family-run estate has produced a bevy of high quality, noteworthy wines in both 2016 and 2015. Despite seeing plenty of new oak, I nevertheless find a very traditional style in the wines from Gaillard.
Spicy and peppery on the palate with rich black fruit and firm tannic grip. Delicious umami savoury character on the finish, like mushroom sauce and olives. Has the potency of Cornas without the rough edges. (RH)
