Score 94/100 · James Suckling, Jun 2018

This 2014 Old Block has a sturdy feel, delivering a well-structured and full-bodied Barossa shiraz. The aromas run the gamut from red to dark fruits. Black stones, earthy notes, dried flowers and cedary wood, too. The palate has great depth, and the tannins are well-fitted to the fruit. There’s potential to come. Best from 2022. Screw cap.

62% Barossa Valley, 38% Eden Valley. The Old Block is a vineyard planted in 1912. Rain forced a relatively early vintage starting 4 February. Aged in new French oak. Mid crimson. Warm, rich, nose suggests something a little salty. Not as uncomfortably tart as its Blackwell 2015 stablemate but still chock full of acid and tannin. Far from comfortable to taste at this stage. It may well mellow on the palate as well as it has on the nose but is quite pinched on the end at the moment. The nose seems to have galloped ahead of the palate. Rather short on the finish. (JR)
