Tasted blind. Deep ruby colour. Bright red fruit and a hint of vanilla bean on the nose. Slick, fine fruit on the palate. Tangy redcurrants and strawberries. Pithy, chalky on the finish, which as with many other wines in this vintage has just too much acidity to shine at this stage. Here, however, there is potential. (TP)

69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot . Deep crimson. Much more ambitious than some of its neighbours. Intense nose. Very dry on the end but there is some energy here. Even if it’s pretty drying on the finish at the moment. (JR)

The 2017 Dauzac was picked from 17 September and finished at the end of the month. Matured in 65% new oak it has a surprisingly intense black cherry, blueberry and violet, a vivacious bouquet that I hope is in situ once this is bottled. The palate is medium-bodied with dense black fruit, wild strawberry, quite grippy in the mouth with a structured but elegant finish. Don't under-estimate this Margaux because under Laurent Fortin the team produced a delightful Margaux.

There have been many changes here over the past few decades – from changing rootstock and restructuring the vineyards, to an ever-smaller selection for the Grand Vin, making Dauzac an estate to watch.
