Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Goulée by Cos d'Estournel is a blend of 72% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, coming from a 30-year-old vineyard located north of Cos. The wine opens with notes of baked plums, warm black cherries and black raspberries with suggestions of allspice, pencil shavings and black truffles plus a waft of roses. Medium-bodied, the palate features fantastic freshness and bags of bright, pure red and black fruits, framed by plush tannins and finishing on a spicy note.

The base Bordeaux from this grand estate, the 2017 Goulee by Cos D'Estournel reveals a medium ruby hue as well as a juicy, delicious, easy-drinking style. Coming from the north of the Medoc, with lots of cedary herbs, red currants, leather, and earthy notes, it's well worth drinking. The blend is 72% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, aged 12 months in 30% new French oak.

72% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon (planted 2012), 4% Cabernet Franc. Very deep crimson. Lifted and lightly leafy nose alongside fresh dark fruit. Darker and more savoury on the palate, like char but seems to be more from the fruit than from the oak, a dark savoury character. Dry, fine texture. Sober, firm but supple. Not a lot of joy (yet) but there's harmony and elegance. (JH)

This shows some dark fruit with plum and berry character. Spice and dried-herb undertones. Full-bodied, layered and very juicy.
