The 2017 Château Lamothe-Bergeron has a more herbal edge but offers plenty of redcurrant and cherry fruits as well as plnety of cedary spice and tobacco nuances. It's ripe, balanced, and enjoyable, and should keep through 2026, with a gradual decline given its lively, balanced style.

The 2017 Lamothe-Bergeron is powerful and racy to the core, just as it was from barrel. Grilled herbs, chocolate, licorice, tobacco and cedar add pretty aromatic top notes. In the glass, the 2017 is plump, bold and juicy, all qualities that make it a joyous wine to enjoy now and over the next 7-10 years.

The 2017 Lamothe-Bergeron is a wine that either I under-estimated in barrel or has improved considerably in bottle. Either way, it is an absolutely delicious Cru Bourgeois. Firstly, it has gained delineation on the nose, those black brambly fruit seemingly brought into focus, vivid and sporting an almost graphite-like scent. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-tuned blackberry and hints of blueberry fruit. A keen thread of acidity and just the right amount of austerity counterbalance the fruit concentration on the finish. Classic Bordeaux really. It will give at least a decade's worth of drinking pleasure.

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. Mid crimson. Subtle, cedary dark fruit on the nose. A little bit leafy. On the palate this is slightly lean but just in balance and certainly fresh. Upright, fine tannins. Maybe could have done with just a touch more flesh. Chocolate texture more than flavour on the finish. (JH)
