Burgaud's 2016 Morgon Côte du Py is pure and expressive, bursting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums, red berry preserve and rose petal. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, tangy and deep, with a cool, juicy core of fruit and a long, fragrant finish. It's racier and more elegant than the 2017 rendition, but they're on the same qualitative level.

Mid crimson. Much more red fruited and scented than the Régnié, and some fresh herbs. Firmly rounded, super-smooth already though still a lot more to come. All so integrated and mouth-watering. Apparently easy and approachable but still has so much depth and potential. (JH)

Jean-Marc Burgaud does not buy in any grapes, preferring to make only domaine wines from his 19 ha of vineyards. He works conscientiously in the vineyards to obtain the quality of fruit required for whole-bunch fermentation, the proportion of which varies depending on the vintage and the quality of the grapes and stems. He ferments and ages his wines in tank, preferring to let the terroir express itself rather than be hidden by oak. Bright, deep crimson. Very rich nose for a beaujolais. Juicy and confident with real minerally savour. Sui generis with an almost northern rhône sort of line and gloss. So clean, long and healthy on the finish. Revitalising. (JR)
