Score 94/100 · Drink 2018-2030, David Schildknecht, Vinous, Dec 2018

Riesling-like white peach and lime are joined by snap pea, honeydew melon and golden beets for a lusciously ripe yet brightly juicy, crunchy , intriguingly earthy performance on a silken palate. Incisively peppery, alkaline and shimmeringly stony impingements serve for stimulating and fascinating counterpoint on a vibrantly sustained finish strikingly transparent to cooling green herbal accents as well as bittersweet, iris-like inner-mouth perfume.

Fresh floral scent with well-defined green apple and a long slaty note on the finish. Some honey and herbs adds complexity on the finish. (RH)

The 2016 Ried Achleiten Grüner Veltliner Smaragd has a clear, intense and mineral nose with perfectly ripe but not too dominant fruit aromas that give the bouquet a discreet but complex and aristocratic character. Full-bodied, intense and fresh on the palate, this is a rich but also finessed and stimulatingly salty Grüner Veltliner with ripe seed fruit aromas in the finish. This Achleiten could be enjoyed early, but it can certainly age for more than a decade. The finesse and freshness of the acidity is just gorgeous here. It is a light and more classic style compared to the giant 2015. There is just 12.5% alcohol and certainly not a single raisin included here, just healthy grapes... Tasted in July 2017.
