Tasting notes
Radda in Chianti. 80% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot. Mid to deep ruby with narrow orange rim. Subdued, peppery note with aromas of wet earth and cool fruit. Quite an imposing tannic structure for the gentle fruit on the palate, but perhaps this just needs more age. Very tannic finish. (WS)

The 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva hits all the high notes expected of this historic denomination. The wine is brimming with cherry fruit and luscious darkness with spice, leather and unsweetened chocolate. The blend is 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot, and the wine is aged in medium toast barrique (both new and neutral) for 16 months. Like the other successful interpretations from this classic vintage, this expression reveals an impressive sense of balance. If I had to make a 2013 Chianti Classico short list, this wine would be on it.
Supple and open-knit, the 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva offers lovely depth and succulence. Sweet red cherry, plum, mint, and spice meld together in an effortless, fleshy wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. The addition of 20% Merlot adds attractive depth that comes through nicely, especially in the mid-palate.
