Tasting notes
(14.5%: from 100+-year old vines at 2,300 meters): Bright medium ruby. Musky nose offers scents of blackberry, cassis, licorice, spices and minerals. A bit thicker and sweeter than the 2014 Estate but the concentrated dark berry flavors show good medicinal reserve and firm framing acidity. A distinctly toothcoating wine with serious chewy persistence and a suggestion of almost exotic ripeness on the finish. Very impressive for the vintage, but today I find a bit more definition and complexity in the 2014 Estate Malbec. Still, this wine has a lovely sugar/acid balance.

Malbec from Colomé vineyard, mostly from the old vines (100-150 years old) – the vineyard (behind the hotel) that attracted Hess to this place in the beginning. Old vineyard on own roots. Authentic in the field – flood irrigation, low yields, 45 hl/ha. Very low intervention. Unoaked. About to be introduced to the UK, apparently. Very dark colour. Black cherry. Peppery, rocky very dark fruited but just a little floral. Dry yet sweet fruited with great intensity. So pure and long and fine boned. Finesse, freshness and rocky, granite-derived minerality. Incredibly long. Finesse incarnate and so intense but dry and light on its feet. (JH)
The unoaked 2015 Auténtico Malbec is a homage to the Colomé of yesteryear produced by the Dávalos family, the previous owners of Colomé. It's sourced from old Malbec vines, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for some ten months in vat, including malolactic. Mr. Dávalos hates oak and never allowed any barrique in his cellar, and this wine is a tribute to his work. They are also harvesting a little earlier, looking for freshness. This is juicy and floral, with good ripeness and soft tannins with a soft texture and very good balance. This is a blend of fruit from older parral vineyards and some higher altitude vines planted at El Arenal at some 2,600 meters. They have now identified which vineyards work better for this wine, which shows the naked character of the place without the possibility to use any makeup. Authentic! 48,000 bottles produced.
