Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 2011 has fine delineation and minerality on the nose: great precision and good intensity here. The palate is poised and focused with hints of peach and apricot. It is threaded through with a fine line of acidity and just marred by a slightly overworked yet still attractive finish. This is a commendable wine from Ente that should age well.

(from a selection massale planted in 1965; due to the effect of hail, Ente did not pick these vines early in 2011--or in 2012): Bright, pale yellow-straw. Reticent but lively nose offers mandarin orange and peach accented by pepper. Rich and chewy in the mouth, with a tactile oily peach flavor firmed by a peppery quality. Seems a bit less ripe and pliant than the Seve du Clos, and more edgy on the finish today. Is this wine simply tight, or was the ripeness of the fruit held back by the hail? The crop level here was a low 32 hectoliters per hectare, according to Ente.
0.22 ha. Lots of minerals and tightness. Nuts and fruits and a much more open structure than the best of his Meursaults. Refined and great copybook stuff but perhaps without the enormous personality of, say, Sève du Clos. (JR)
Bright straw-yellow. Aromas of peach, hazelnut and nutmeg. Juicy and spicy in the mouth but seemingly less rich and concentrated than the Seve du Clos, with peach and white pepper flavors leading to a lemony, slightly tart finish that hints at rye bread. A bit less buffering material here. In contrast to the Seve du Clos, says Ente, "this is always a more ethereal style, more dry and austere."
