The red fruit is very appealing here with a wealth of raspberries and mulberries, as well as redcurrant notes. The palate has attractively juicy and succulent red berries and a chalky, piercing finish. Second wine of Château Prieuré-Lichine. Try from 2023.

A little tight and reserved with bright fruit and citrus undertones. Medium body and a bright finish. Second wine. Mar 17, www.jamessuckling.com

The 2016 Prieure-Lichine took a little encouragement from the glass, eventually revealing blackberry, blueberry and violet aromas, just a touch of earthiness in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin cloaked in plenty of succulent black fruit tinged with graphite and smoke. I admire the linearity of this classic Margaux, quite persistent in the mouth with satisfying freshness from start to finish. I am sure this will reside at the top of my banded score once in bottle. This is full of dark fruits, maintained in the winery by the use of careful pumping over and short maceration periods at a maximum of 26°C. The grapes come from a wide array of sites, so it helps that winemaker, Stéphane Derenoncourt, chose to vinify them separately and blend after ageing – protecting the subtle identity of each in the final wine. Bottled in May 2018.
