2016 Montrose

Tasting notes
The 2016 Montrose has a more backward bouquet than its peers, but there is real complexity and nuance here: blackberry mixed with tobacco and light pencil shaving scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very supple and harmonious, caressing the mouth towards the classy finish so that you almost do not notice the depth and precision. Class. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Deep ruby colour, with stormingly attractive aromatics and welcoming opening beats of flowers and grilled spice. Mouthwatering from the off, lives up to its reputation, anis, fennel, graphite, crayon, cassis. Yes it could do with longer in the bottle and yes it's already delicious and you could start to enjoy today with a long carafe. Love this wine. Hervé Berland director, owned by the Bouygues family.
An unquestionaly brilliant Montrose, this is a legendary bottle already, and just about ready to drink if you give it a seriously long carafe - on our testing at home, I suggest opening it in the morning for an evening meal. It's supple, concentrated, powerful, richly textured, with dark chocolate, cassis, blackberry, pomegranate, cigar box, liquorice root, graphite. Harvest September 22 to October 17. Hervé Berland director, owned by the Bouygues family.
The 2016 Montrose is a supremely gifted Saint-Estèphe. Very harmonious and precise on the nose, faint hints of mocha and freshly rolled tobacco are behind those floral scents, black rather than red fruit. The palate has very fine tannins, extraordinarily harmonious with a nigh-perfect line of acidity. There is a subtle crescendo that leaves you utterly smitten by its charms, a touch of graphite on the finish. I just have the feeling that this might close up for a while. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the Icons of Bordeaux dinner at Legacy Records in New York.
