Tasting notes
Good medium red. Aromas of raspberry, camphor, pepper and leather. Layered and fairly deep, with a slight rusticity to the flavors of red berries, mint and camphor. Combining a serious spine and restrained sweetness, this firmly tannic, moderately long '06 needs more time in bottle.

The 2006 Barolo Ravera is a big, firm wine. Dark red cherries, flowers, mint, tobacco and spices take shape in the glass in this intense Barolo. Sweet, floral notes develop over time, fleshing out the wine nicely. Today the Ravera is a bit clenched, but that is typical of the year. It should be fabulous with further bottle age.

Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. The only problem with these wines from Flavio Roddolo is that they will be difficult to find. Readers who are able to source the wines will be treated to the work of one of Piedmont’s greatest artisan growers. Roddolo’s main vineyards are located on steep hillsides just outside of the center of Monforte, in one of the most pristine corners of the village. Importer: Jan D’Amore Wines, Brooklyn, NY; tel.
