The 2015 Gigondas from Chapoutier is Grenache-dominated (there's some Syrah in the blend as well) and was raised all in concrete tank. It has the telltale Gigondas nose of sandalwood and cedary spice as well as terrific black raspberry and plum fruit, medium to full-bodied richness, and fine, polished tannin. It's a ripe, downright sexy Gigondas that shines in the vintage. The ever-active Michel Chapoutier continues to churn out a huge number of high-quality wines, both from his base in the northern Rhône as well as here in the south. While his top cuvées are always noteworthy, his value releases have soared in quality over the past few years and these are well worth your time and money.

The 2015 Gigondas is a crisp, high-altitude blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre. Intriguing aromas of sandalwood and leather add complexity to raspberry and pomegranate flavors, making it an intense and layered experience. I wouldn't be surprised to see this wine outlast Chapoutier's bottlings from Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Ruby-red. Smoke-accented red berry and cherry scents are sharpened by a suggestion of white pepper. Broad and weighty on the palate, offering bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors that tighten up on the back half. Chewy and focused, delivering solid closing thrust; youthful tannins add shape and firm grip. Definitely show this one some patience.

Predominantly Grenache, with some Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. Partial maturation in oak for 12-16 months. Tasted blind. The merest hint of animal fur on the nose and rather austere, green phenolics on the finish. Very hard work! (JR)
