(destemmed; these vines on soil rich in red clay are mostly 40 years old; the yield here was just 17 hectoliters per hectare due to hail the previous two years, according to owner Edouard Labruyère): Bright red-ruby. Penetrating scents of black cherry and licorice complicated by leather and smoke nuances. Offers excellent primary fruit intensity with a framing element of minerality. Finishes firm and long but with nothing dry about the tannins. An excellent showing.

The 2015 Beaune 1er Cru Champs Pimont was totally de-stemmed and is being raised in 20% new oak. Here I discerned just a little bit of sur-maturite, although that could be addressed by the completion of its elevage. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grippy tannin. There is plenty of burly black fruit here with a firm backbone, quite assertive towards the finish that needs to muster more finesse. Dec 2016, www.robertparker.com
