Cascina Fontana's 2010 Barolo is not for the timid. Huge swaths of tannin provide the backbone for a super-classic wine that shows the more austere side of Barolo, and I mean that in the best sense of the word. Sweet red cherries, mint, orange peel and white pepper are some of the notes that inform this intense, pulsating wine. The slightly oxidative style is decidedly old school, yet it all works nicely. There is no shortage of intrigue here. It would be great to see a little more finesse, however.

Monforte d’Alba. Classic nose of dried cherry and herb liqueur that seems more developed that it should be. Bitter sweet tannins and ripe fruit. Well made. (WS)
