Looking at the 2014s, these are easily up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. The top cuvée is the 2014 Saint Joseph Le Paradis Saint Pierre, which comes from a single parcel of old vines planted on a steep, granite hillside just outside the village of Mauves. Deep ruby/purple-tinged, it offers beautiful, granite-influenced notes of black cherries, wood smoke, black olive, liquid rocks and even a hint of bacon fat. This rich, medium-bodied, concentrated and yet always elegant beauty isn’t a blockbuster, but is impeccably balanced and will evolve gracefully.

(aged in 10% new oak): Opaque ruby. Spicy, highly perfumed aromas of cherry, black currant and smoky minerals are backed by a vibrant floral note. Gently sweet and expansive on the palate, offering energetic blackberry and cherry compote flavors that show excellent concentration and thrust. Taut, focused and penetrating on the strikingly persistent, smoke-tinged finish, with dusty tannins providing shape. Don't plan on opening this one for a while.

The inky colored 2014 St Joseph le Paradis St Pierre (100% Syrah that will see 14 months in 5% new demi-muids) reveals tons of granite character in its peppery herbs, and earthy black and blue fruits. Coming all from the Paradis lieu-dit, which lies just to the west of the estate (located in the village of Mauves), this medium plus-bodied, elegant, nicely concentrated Syrah has more depth and density than the l’Olivaie cuvee and should have a broader drink window.

Pale gold. A little watery. Lightly pungent. Just a tad pale and timid. Not quite fresh enough. (JR)
