Here in its first vintage, the 1993 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio (magnum) shows a work in progress. Elegant and nuanced, the 1993 is in fine shape tonight. Sweet dried cherry, mint, crushed flowers and orange peel all grace this delicate Barolo. Mascarello only bottled 18 magnums in 1993; we have two of them in the room.

The 1993 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio opens with gorgeous aromas of roses, flowers and sweet spices. It remains a medium-bodied, focused Barolo on the palate, showing terrific energy and focus. Sweet, silky tannins round out the finish. The 1993 is a relatively two-dimensional Cà d'Morissio, yet the wine offers commendable balance and harmony.
Medium red with faint amber at the rim. Ripe aromas of spice cake, marzipan and loamy earth. Sweet, lush and spicy in the mouth; red berry flavors enlivened by a minty edge. Nicely buffered tannins. A superb '93, and quite a performance considering these vines were just five years old.
