Tasting notes
Deep and layered nose of black cherry, scorched earth, pencil shavings, black tea and rose. Big boned on the palate with tightly structured tannins and electric acidity. Powerful and complex flavours of spicy/mossy earth, black currant, spiced plums and savoury herbs. Highly recommended. (Mar 2016) Drink 2021-2031

There's lots of wood on the 2012 Barolo Le Coste, but it comes off as sweet and spicy. The wine shows lingering notes of cinnamon, clove and baking spice. A touch of sour astringency appears on the close.
A deep, powerful wine, the 2012 Le Coste is a bit more structured and classically austere than the Sotto Castello, with the acidity and tannin pushed forward and the fruit more in the background. Today, the Le Coste is tightly wound, but it should open up nicely with time in bottle. Graphite, mint, sage and dark stone fruits add the final layers of nuance.
