The 2015 La Confession is done in a very ripe, pushed style. There is good up-front intensity to the dark plum fruit, chocolate and licorice flavors, but then much of the persistence drops off on the midpalate and finish. It would be nice to see a little more complexity and follow-through here. Tasted two times.
A blend of 71% Merlot and 29% Cabernet Franc matured in 100% new French oak barrels, the 2015 La Confession has intense notes of crushed plums, warm black currants and black cherries with touches of charcuterie, Marmite toast and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and a lively backbone of muscular fruit, it finishes with an herbal lift.
From a tiny estate located just east of Libourne and clay, sandy soils, made with consulting advice from Jean-Philippe Fort, the 2015 Château La Confession is an outstanding blend of roughly 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc that saw malo and aging in new barrels. It boasts a deep ruby/purple color in addition to terrific notes of blackberries, blueberries, violets, damp earth and spring flowers. With medium to full-bodied richness, an elegant, fresh mouthfeel, and integrated acidity, it’s worth seeking out and will drink well for 10-15 years.
