Tasting notes
The 2013 The Tempest shows the dark, virile side of the vintage off nicely, but it is a somewhat light wine for the year, which means that it drinks well now, unlike so many 2013s. Black cherry and plum fruit are nicely pushed forward in this racy, inviting wine. Time in the glass brings out terrific resonance and plenty of stylishness.

The 2013 Tempest is Realm's homage to Right Bank Bordeaux, as it is a blend of 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. Like Shakespeare's famous play, this is meant to be an in-your-face, boisterous, expressive and flamboyant wine. Most of the grapes tend to come from great vineyards such as Dr. Crane and others. The wine is lush and ripe, with a stunning nose of coffee beans, chocolate, black cherries, and blackberries. It is deep, heady, and enormously appealing in its opulence and sexiness. Drink it over the next 7-10 years.
Realm's Merlot-based 2013 The Tempest is deep, powerful and intense. Ripe and opulent to the core, the 2013 hits the palate with serious richness and overall intensity. The flavors are bold and racy throughout, with plenty of blueberry jam and cherry liqueur nuances. Spice, mocha leather and tobacco meld into the open-knit, sweet finish. There is plenty of near and medium-term appeal here.
