Bright, bright yellow. Subtle aromas of orange oil, honey and vanillin oak. At once sweet, silky and energetic, with intense yellow fruit, saline and honey flavors supported by a strong mineral underpinning. Finishes with palate-saturating minerality and terrific length. Roulot told me that he used a new Damy barrel with a different toast and that it resulted in a rounder wine.

The 2013 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières, which comes from the domaines 0.26-hectares of vine purchased in 1976, is not quite as expressive as the Charmes '13 at this stage. But there is a beguiling marine influence here, hints of oyster shells that develop with time. The palate is linear, brooding and strict, touches of lime and stem ginger, long on the finish but perhaps lacking the same charm and personality as the Charmes.
Discreet nose and great grip on the palate. Just an approximation to what it will achieve. All tightly nailed down. Extremely precise and well sculpted. But enormous extract. Lightly chewy on the end still. Very long and vibrant. All of the interest is really on the finish. (JR)
