The 2005 Extra-Brut Avize Champ Caïn Dégorgement Tardif is a tiny release of just 500-or-so bottles. Now at nearly 20 years of age, the 2005 is in the peak of its splendor. Apricot, chamomile, spice, ginger and tangerine oil abound. The 2005 is slender and energetic, with very good energy and fine balance. I would give this a good bit of air or another year in the cellar to see if more body develops. This is positively stellar. Disgorged: March 2023.

Single vineyard, south-facing, bottom of the slope, clay-chalk and sand. 100% Chardonnay. 1.3 ha planted in 1962. Almost nine years on lees. Disgorged February 2015. Dosage 2.5 g/l. Toasty nose. Racy with bruised-apple component. Probably the blends are more rounded champagnes. Of intellectual interest? (JR)

Very attractive fresh yeasty bread dough notes. Really impressive freshness on this long aged Blanc de Blanc, with chalky lemon and lime essence, some amazing finesse and aromatic purity here. The palate has a wealth of layering, texturally superior. It has impressive build and depth, and acidity sits under richly flavorsome lemon and peach fruit. Long, fine and focused with contained power. Drink now or for five or more years.

Jacquesson's 2005 Avize-Champ Gain is all about volume, depth and texture. Dried apricot, honey, smoke and mint flesh out in an expansive Champagne built on power and muscle to match a decidedly vertical sense of structure. The 2005 needs air, as it develops nicely with further time in the glass. Disgorged October 2014. Dosage was 2.5 grams/liter.
