The 2011 Vinha Maria Teresa hasn't been seen for a couple of years so it is good to check in. I had the opportunity to see it again during an event with other single-plot wines from Crasto. Some were complex stars (2007 Ponte), some were a bit compact (2014 Ponte, 2012 Ponte), some were right on track (2013 Maria Teresa), but this might have been the pick of the litter. I don't usually produce notes on quick tastes but this is worth a mention as it continues on its way in the cellar. Always impeccably balanced, this still has the backbone for the long haul but it is also approachable. (It was double decanted and in the glass for awhile to reach that point.) Its mid-palate finesse is reminiscent of that old world approach (excuse the stereotype). Both elegant and tightly wound, it is nowhere near peak just now but it is already on the expressive side. Sophisticated and suave, it's a beauty that is irresistible. It only has one task left—to acquire a little more complexity with time.

Vines aged 100+ – field blend. TA 5.4 g/l, pH 3.5. 20 months in new oak, 85% French, 15% American. Spicy, savoury and still quite chewy, but with the noticeable herbal character of the local wild shrubs (esteva). Lots of spice and fruit-sweetness on the palate and a slight heat on the finish. Warm, intense and powerful – nowhere near ready and a long future in this excellent vintage. (JH)

Delightfully complex. Not a disappointment at all. Explosive fruit and all in great harmony. Long, rich and dry on the end, and definitely Douro in spirit. Neat and long. (JR)
