The 2014 Chasse-Spleen has a more backward nose than I recall, aniseed, tinged red fruit, just a touch of wild mint. The palate is medium-bodied with lightly spiced red fruit, well balanced and ferrous toward the finish with a spicy finish. This tasted better a few years ago but is still worth seeking out. Tasted non-blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2014 Chasse-Spleen has a more rambunctious bouquet than the 2014 Camensac tasting alongside it, with fresh and very lively black cherry and boysenberry aromas mixed with cedar and pine needles. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity, lovely fleshy blackberry and raspberry fruit mixed with black pepper and tobacco towards the finish. What a delicious 2014 – one that should age with style. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. A bit light and weedy. Decidedly pinched rather than amply fruity. Greenness on the finish. (JR)

The 2014 Chateau Chasse-Spleen is a solid step back from the deeper, more complex, layered 2015 yet is still an elegant, mid-weight effort. Possessing lots of black cherry, mulberry, cedar and Asian spice, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness and moderate density, with detracting, elevated acidity. Give bottles a year or two and enjoy through 2026.
