(picked after the rain): Healthy bright, light yellow. More wet stone and less pristine fruit on the nose, plus suggestions of smoke and yeasty bread. Fat and sweet in the mouth but betrays a slightly tired nutty element. Plenty of concentration but awkward today and lacking distinction. Smokiness is often the result of acidity paired with reduction, noted winemaker Gon. A difficult vintage for this bottling.

‘A bit like Perrières is in Meursault: great wine but less easy. Needs an occasion.’ Less Mâcon than the others. Big impression and almost like sherbet with its obvious sweetness but all reined in on the end. (JR)
The barrel sample of 2013 Mâcon Milly Lamartine Clos du Four had been fined ten days previously. It has a clean and fresh, quite vibrant bouquet with perhaps a little more intensity than the 2012. The palate is very well-balanced with great body, plenty of rounded apple and pear notes with fine precision on the finish. There is a sense of conservatism suffusing this sample - I wonder if it will still be there after bottling?
