Tasting notes
Dark and intensely cherry-colored, the 2009 Blaufränkisch Neckenmarkter Alte Reben offers an intense, still somewhat untamed, flinty and spicy/leathery bouquet of slate, speck and dark ripe berries, as well as floral heath aromas. This wine is currently turning from the primary fruit phase into its second phase where the Neckenmarkt terroir shines through in a more delicate and finesse-full way. Full-bodied, concentrated and intense, the 2009 reveals a silky texture and a lovely freshness and purity as well as great, tension-filled length. The wine is still young, but seems to be ready to fly. With intense fruit flavors in the long and complex aftertaste, this wine is still somewhat austere. Nevertheless, it's a great 2009 Blaufränkisch from Neckenmarkt.

A vineyard 35 minutes from Moric by car. Steep slopes, up to 400 m. At the top of the hill there is schist, then limestone, ex sea. Mainly from primary rock soils. Started here in 2002 and doing lots of single vineyard vinification. Very deep purple. Intense, brooding nose. Very intense and nuanced and beefier than the Lutzmannsburg. Great tension and vibrato. More youthful than most. Still chewy – the chewiest. (JR)
