Score 17.5/20 · Drink 2016-2036, Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com, Jan 2015

Average age of the vines is 30 years. Fermented in stainless steel with selected yeast. The wine stays at least 25 days on the skins. It is aged three years in oak – instead of two years oak and one year in bottle. Healthy mid ruby. Chewy fresh cherry fruit with a cool tannic edge to it. 14.5% but much more lithe than that. (WS)

The 2006 Barolo Monvigliero offers up freshly cut flowers, red berries and mint in a rich style that brilliantly reconciles a generous expression of fruit with a firm, classic sense of structure. There is so much to admire in the Monvigliero today, but readers should really set aside a few bottles in the deepest corner of their cellars. The elegance and pedigree are first-rate. This is another fabulous wine from Alessandria.

Verduno. Medium-deep concentrated ruby. Opulent nose, but a very tannic sweet fruit palate. (WS)
