Root beer, licorice and toasted nut aromas. Quite creamy and rich in the mouth. Both remarkably restrained in its expression of ripeness and long on smoky, wet stone minerality. There is a brothy, meaty richness and depth as well. "I have it in my head now to allow Pralat to show more primary aromas," says Schug, "and not to wait so long before picking in order that it retains acid structure. " That seems to be a very promising new approach. Potential 2 stars.

Taut and introvert nose. Full, sherbetty palate. Full and peachy. Sulphur dioxide. A bit of a gap between the nose and the palate. Very unformed. Needs time. Second (blind) tasting much less impressive: Quite hot and open on the nose (I think this bottle had been open some time whereas at the estate Ernie likes to open and serve bottles straight from the refrigerator) without enormous intensity. Opulent fruit and a bit glucose drink-like. No enormous subtlety. (JR)
