Score 92/100 · James Suckling, Oct 2014

Aromas of blueberry, sliced mushroom and dried flower follow through to a full body, velvety tannins and a dark-chocolate and berry finish. Some smoked meat, too. Better in 2016.

The 2012 Promis IGT (Merlot, Syrah and a smaller component of Sangiovese) does indeed deliver on its promise of Gaja-inspired winemaking excellence. The wine opens to a dark garnet color with nicely balanced aromas of blackberry, red cherry and kirsch. Soft oak contours of tobacco and dark chocolate widen the wine’s aromatic footprint. This is a contemplative and well-executed effort.

The 2012 Promis is a very pretty, fresh wine with considerable near term appeal. Freshly cut flowers, mint and sweet red cherries are laced together in a floral supple Bolgheri red to drink now and over the next few years. The addition of Sangiovese to the blend seems to contribute freshness and energy.

His management of the 2011 heat is impressive, resulting in wines with power and finesse. Ca’Marcanda never seems to get the attention it deserves, and the wines are indeed pricy. Nonetheless, they are among the finest expressions on the Tuscan coast. eRobertParker.com.October, 2014
