Score 85/100 · Drink 2019-2022, Neal Martin, Apr 2019

The 2013 Malartic-Lagravière comprises a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It has a slightly monotone bouquet with blackberry and bilberry fruit, but it does not articulate the terroir with the same panache as the 2012 or 2014. The palate is medium-bodied with bitter tannin on the entry, quite tannic in the mouth but without the fruit to back it up so that the finish feels astringent. I feel the difficult vintage leans heavily on this wine and it falls far short of recent successes at the estate. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Malartic-Lagravière.

90% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Sémillon. Fairly light bodied, fresh lemon fruit, rather flat on the palate, with just a hint of oxidation, perhaps? Doesn’t have the intensity or purity of the 2016. (RH)

Tasted blind. Nutty and fragrant, interesting and complex. Dry, grapefruit flavours. On the leaner side in terms of fruit flavour but lots of mineral intensity and long. (JH)
