Deep garnet colored, the 2005 Hillside Shiraz reveals a wonderfully expressive, spicy nose with some notes of game, potpourri, dried cranberries and kirsch. It is a glorious, full-bodied wine packed with complex flavor layers, medium-firm velvety tannins and balanced acid. It finishes long.

It is a glorious, full-bodied wine packed with complex flavor layers, medium-firm velvety tannins and balanced acid. It finishes long. Drink it now to 2017+. My visit at Kay Brothers included tastings of back vintages of the Hillside Shiraz and the Block 6 Shiraz as a demonstration of how these very special wines can age. The 2005 Amery Shiraz spent 18 months in American oak, 10% new. It is purple-colored with straightforward aromas of cedar, tobacco, damp earth, and blueberry. This is followed by a full-bodied, savory, spicy Shiraz that becomes slightly compact in the finish. Drink it over the next 4-6 years. The Kay Brothers Amery Winery and Vineyards was founded in 1890 and continues to be 100% owned by the Kay family. For wine tourists looking for an out of the ordinary visit, the winery is a veritable museum of how things were done back in the “ol’ days.” Importer: Dan Philips, The Grateful Palate, Oxnard, CA; www.kaybrothersamerywines.com
