Score 87/100 · Drink 2002-2010, Robert Parker, Aug 2002

The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley reveals complex aromatics of spice box, fruit cake, new oak, and dried herbs. Its frontal attack offers plenty of black currant fruit, licorice, olives, and Provencal herbs. Although it does not possess the size of previous vintages of the nineties, it is built along the lines of a good Bordeaux. Its deficiency is its short finish. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Tel. Medium red-ruby, with some amber at the rim. Currant, mocha and smoke aromas, along with a pronounced weedy, vegetal element. Offers only modest texture and ripeness in the mouth; I don't find a lot of flavor development here. Finishes with light but slightly drying tannins. A bit tart throughout.
