I couldn’t help myself. The 1997 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio (magnum), served as a bonus wine, is remarkably youthful. Dark fruit, soy, leather, cloves and lavender are amplified in this decidedly voluptuous, dense Barolo. Readers who own it are in for a real treat. It’s an extraordinary wine by any measure.

Full bottle 1,315 g. From the best bit of Monprivato and plant material of the very old Michet vines specially mass selected by Mauro M’s grandfather and then selected again by Mauro’s father Giuseppe in 1959. Made only in the best years. 1–2 years’ ageing in 28- to 30-hl casks. Dark, shaded, blackish ruby. Very intense nose of liquorice and tar. Definitely ready to drink even though there's an undertow of grainy tannin. Very long and rich. Massively rich fruit but it all finishes dry and like essence of Barolo. Quite a triumph for a 27-year-old Barolo! (JR)

A much deeper, richer wine, the 1997 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Ca’ d’Morissio from Giuseppe Mascarello captures the essence of the year to the fullest. Dark red stone fruit, spice, leather and espresso notes blossom in a rich, unctuous wine with a demi-glace like sense of unctuosity. The 1997 is starting to present the first signs of tertiary complexity, and won’t last forever, but it is gorgeous today.
