The 2008 Pinot Noir shows evolving fruit notes of baked cherries, dried cranberry, potpourri and a touch of forest floor. Medium-bodied, the palate offers lots of dried berry and earthy flavors, chewy tannins and a long finish.

Estate Red Hill vineyard and two leased Red Hill vineyards. Average vine age is 15-20 years. The soil on all three vineyards is deep red volcanic clay that allows dry-land growing (no irrigation). Six clones are planted. 100% destemmed and cold soaked for one to two days. Each fermenter was hand-plunged three times per day. Several days of post-ferment maceration then pressed to tank (one day) and barrel for malolactic. 50% was aged in new French oak barriques and 50% in first- and second-use barrels for 10 months. TA 8.2 g/l, pH 3.43. Stelvin closure. Bright cherry red. Really quite seductive, while not being gratuitously sweet. Very complete and gorgeous. Now this wine had the full panoply of ripe fruit and stunning bouquet with the structure. (JR)
